Emotional intelligence (EQ) refers to a person’s capacity to perceive, understand and manage their own feelings and emotions. Psychologist Daniel Goleman explains the five core components of EQ as being: self-awareness, self-regulation, internal (or intrinsic) motivation, empathy, and social skills.
Why is emotional intelligence a key leadership competency in the workplace?
Employees with higher emotional intelligence are better equipped to work in a team environment, and are more likely to be open and receptive to change. Given the rapid pace of technological innovations and advances, and the challenges that this presents in the workplace, the ability to accept and manage change is becoming more important than ever.
Furthermore, leaders that practice emotional intelligence in management are more adept at motivating team members, facilitating collaboration, and helping employees to increase their own. Research also suggests that the overall emotional intelligence of a team is a significant factor in determining their success. Teams with greater emotional awareness are better able to regulate their emotions during interactions, build trust, resolve conflict, cooperate and collaborate; all of which contribute to higher overall performance.
